“Finnish experimental electronic/piano-pop composer and lyricist Laura Avonius goes by the name GEA, and she, along with sound artist, musician, and producer Mikko H. Haapoja, have crafted a delicately reflective to airily uplifting EP, Pink, which arrives on April 25th.
Avonius’ vocals often get compared to the otherworldly pipes of Bjork and Kate Bush, but her floating delivery is a bit more diaphanous and subdued. Her piano-driven tunes recall the poignancy of certain arrangements by Kate Bush and the soft electronic scintillation does evoke the gentler side of Bjork.
The title track showcases Avonius’ skills as a composer and vocalist as she drifts contemplatively along on the wafting electronic diffusion, muffled pattering percussion, and meditative placement of bright piano notes. In the background, extended wordless vocals from Haapoja act as another instrument, buoying Avonius’ at times emotionally fragile vocals. Pink is a sublime song that pairs an inner a restless edge with its more serene exterior.”
